There is little doubt NASCAR fans know their cars. Or at least advertisers and industry cater to this huge block of Americans as knowledgeable car enthusiasts. Advertising is focused overwhelmingly on the high performance end. Speed, power and handling are important in NASCAR and therefore are regarded as important to the fan base.

NASCAR runs teams backed by Chevy, Dodge, Ford and Toyota (the latter only runs in the truck series) and the rivalry is intense. Car loyalty is important and this is often mirrored in what people drive. Through its Dodge line, Daimler Chrysler has continued to eat into Chevy and Ford’s lion share of the teams (NASCAR was formally dominated by the exclusive rivalry between Ford and Chevy).

So what does the tailgating, beer drinking loyal NASCAR fan want inside the car? Space for the cooler and a great sound system to play country music? I will address this through a couple of interviews with NASCAR fans.

Interestingly, dedicated NASCAR fans tend drive (often for many hours) to the weekend events with friends and family. This places many fans into similar scenarios to the 20 something weekend snowboarders we discussed during the Brainstorming session on June, 30th.
