Lots and lots of car ads here, as makes sense for a magazine that, while technically gender neutral, has still been read more by men than women.
- hummer h3. tagline ‘now you can get one before you ink the record deal’ concentrating on price rather than size with a brief mention of their ‘off road reputation’, it is otherwise identical to the humvee ad in InStyle.
- Toyota Tacoma, tagline ‘a roomy cab. Because real dogs don’t fit in handbags’. Clearly, aimed at an audience that wants things to be real, although in this context whether that means authentic/genuine or manly is up for debate. Mentions ‘available 270-watt, six speaker, howling JBL sound system’.
- Pontiac g6, tagline ‘the art of four doors’. Text begins with ‘a four-door sedan should be more than practical’, assuming that you already know their cars are practical, and this not discussing the practical aspects. This is very carefully ender neutral in presentation, I think.
- chevy cobalt, tagline ‘the straight and narrow is highly overrated’. Only mentions performance features, very neutral ad.
- bridgestone potenza. Obviously, not a car, but tires. ‘racing-inspired technology…make your move in bridgestone potenza tires’
- Subaru impreza, tagline ‘forged form decades of rally experience’. Performance features only.
- acura tsx, no tagline. Emphasis on speed, ‘sometimes, fast isn’t fast enough’.
- dodge charger, tagline ‘grab life by the horns’. car on salt flats, only performance features mentioned, nominally neutral ad.
- safety ad, ‘esuvee’. Portraying SUVs as monsters (with hair, etc) and giving a brief lesson on how correct tire pressure can reduce (but not eliminate) the risk of rollover. Says it’s 3rd in a series.
- Mitsubishi eclipse, tagline ‘you’ve practically lost your license just looking at it’. concentrates on speed, obviously. Performance features, although the ‘650-watt Rockford Fosgate premium audio system’ is mentioned.
there are also three motorcycle ads in here, which I thought I’d include, because I haven’t really found a lot of places that have both.
- triumph rocket III, tagline ‘the cure for the common cruiser’. This shows a man and a woman riding together, which contrasts with the other cycle ads, usually featuring a man alone. Concentrates again on performance, but includes handling and smoothness in with performance features.
- victory vegas (contest with fantastic four), tagline ‘the new American motorcycle’, no other info because it’s a contest.
- victory hammer, tagline ‘speak boy. Speak’ text discusses performance features, but little else.
