Examples of qualitative assessment of STS are: timed STS; able/unable (ex. Tinetti), timed STS x5.
Based on kinematic and force plate data researchers have attempted to define the different stages during STS. These vary between 4 to 8 distinct stages with differing names. However, there is a common stage in all studies, the flexion momentum (FM) phase. This is the transition phase of STS when the person goes form a 3 point base of support to 2 point (until almost completely upright - see slide 6).
