Railroaded

HISTORIC:

This is another photograph emphasizing the necessity of both cutting and filling the land when grading a railroad. What appears to be steam at the station is probably spray from the water tank. Notice the crude road crossing the track in the middle of the picture just beyond the cut. Although there is a frame house to the right of the station, this picture illustrates the relative isolation of many early stations.

MODERN:

In this photograph, the cutting and filling that was the emphasis of the first photograph are still visible in the contrast of the level of the road and of the railroad bed. The modern photograph gives you a view of the Auburn Station from another angle. Notice how just as was the case with the original railroad, modern track beds collect debris and discarded equipment.
