Strada che unisce con la Via Latina |
Porta S. Giovanni, built by Iacopo del Duca during the reign of Gregory XII (1572-85), replaced the nearby ancient semi-interred Porta Asinaria (restored in 1962). The name derives from the nearby Patriarchal Basilica of S. Giovanni in Laterano, located just inside the walls. The inscription over the arch refers to the opening of the new gate and the paving of the Via Campana which Vasi refers to as "Strada che unisce con la Via Latina" issuing from it. It reads:
GREGORIVS XIII • PONT• MAX PVBLICAE VTILITATI ET VRBIS ORNAMENTO VIAM CAMPANAM CONSTRAVIT PORTAM EXSTRVXIT ANNO MDLXXIIII PONT • III
The building at far left, described by Vasi as "Mola di grano sopra la Marana," was a grain mill operated by a stream called Marana, which is not visible in the print. Nolli shows both the mill (marked "Mola") and the stream.
