Imago Urbis: Giuseppe Vasi's Grand Tour of Rome

  037.   Piazza alli Monti

    Piazza alli Monti
  1. Chiesa di S Sergio e Bacco
  2. Chiesa di S Maria de Monti
  3. Strada delli Serpenti

As much as in the piazza, Vasi seems to have been interested in the street, Strada delli Serpenti (3), which he widens considerably so as to show the buildings lining its right side in some detail. As if to make the point, he deemphasized the fountain by moving it to the right of the church, while actually it is located to its left, nearly aligned with the right edge of Via dei Serpenti. The fountain itself is by Della Porta and datable to the reign of Sixtus V (1585-90). The same architect designed the church whose corner is seen at the left edge of the print, Madonna dei Monti (2), which Vasi shows more fully as a contiguous view in his ninth volume, Plate 169. The modest 9th century church of SS Sergio e Bacco (1) was given a new facade in 1741 and renamed S. Maria del Pascolo.
