Imago Urbis: Giuseppe Vasi's Grand Tour of Rome

037a.   Piazza di Macel de Corvi

    Piazza di Macel de Corvi
  1. Principio della salita di Marforio
  2. Sepolcro di C. Publicio
  3a. Colonna Trajana
3b. Chiesa del SS Nome di Maria

The urban space defined as a piazza by both Vasi and Nolli was little more than one of the many Y-intersections or triviums to be found in Rome. The street on which Vasi stood to obtain this view split to left and right around the building (with a balcony) in the middle distance. The right hand branch is not visible, but the left hand branch is shown leading to Piazza della Colonna Traiana (NN 113; Plate 38) where the Column of Trajan (3a) and the church of SS. Nome di Maria (3b) are located. Of the buildings depicted in this view, the latter two monuments and the Tomb of Caius Bibulus (2), in the right foreground, are all that have survived the late 19th and early 20th century demolitions near Piazza Venezia (see the contemporary photograph and satellite image). The street in front of the tomb was the Via di Marforio (1) which led to the Roman Forum.
