The carriage in the lower left corner of the print has just come through the entrance portal from Piazza di Montecavallo (Piazza del Quirinale) Plate 61, into this large, irregular walled forecourt of the early 17th century Palazzo Rospigliosi. Irregularity is the theme of this anomalous noble palace complex, which, unlike any other in the city, lacks a formal courtyard. Anthony Blunt describes this palazzo as being "bleak in appearance." The Nolli plan reveals that the only formal elements in the irregular layout are the two giardini segreti (secret gardens, in the sense of being private) which are accessible from the piano nobile (the raised main floor) of the palazzo. One of these is an elevated garden (2) on the near left. Beyond it on the far left we see the south flank of the Palazzo della Consulta (3). The door at far right leads into the stables (5).
