The Ponte Mammolo shown in this view once served as the bridge over the river Aniene for Via Tiburtina (4) the consular road that led to the pre-Roman town of Tibur (modern Tivoli). Vasi shows the Via Tiburtina (1) continuing toward Rome on the left passing through an osteria (inn) (2) built into the bridge. The ancient bridge was destroyed by Totila, leader of the Goths in 537. Shortly after, it was rebuilt by Narses, general of the eastern Emperor, Justinian. The bridge, fortified in the medieval period, shows remains of its defensive tower (5) of the period that was heavily damaged by the French in the 1849 siege of Rome. In the distance Vasi shows a casale (3) in the opern countryside underscoring that the scene is well outside the center. Under Pius IX Mastai-Ferretti (1846-1878) a new bridge further downstream replaced it entirely, so little remains of Vasi's view.
