Imago Urbis: Giuseppe Vasi's Grand Tour of Rome

100a.   Basilica di S. Paolo, e Monastero dei Monici Casinensi

Basilica di S Paolo, e Monastero de Monici casinensi

One of a pair of views depicting the patriarchal church of St. Paul's outside the walls, Plate 100, here we see the facade of the 4th century church flanked by a medieval bell-tower. The portico was applied to the facade at the time of Benedict XIII Orsini (1724-1730). This view shows the church before it burned down in 1823. It was largely rebuilt on the same plan in the following years and completed in 1854. Vasi provides another view of S. Paul’s in his large Patriarchal Church series of four prints.
