Imago Urbis: Giuseppe Vasi's Grand Tour of Rome

127a.   [Ingresso alla Chiesa di S. Prassede, e Monastero dei Monaci di Vallombrosa]

  1. Chiesa di S. Prassede e Monastero dei Monaci di Vallombrosa
  2. Strada della Suburra
  3. Arco di S. Vito

Between 1598 and 1600, one of the two domed corner towers of the perimeter wall of the Baths of Diocletian was converted into the church of S. Bernardo (1) shown in this view. A century later its twin was converted into a public granary (NN 197). The church opens onto a piazza bordered by Via Pia (2), the ancient Alta Semita, the ridge road of the Quirinal hill, which was straightened by Pius IV Medici (1559-1565), and named after him. It is now called Via del Quirinale. A closely related view of the same piazza swings 90 degrees to the left revealing S. Susanna and its neighbor, the Fontana dell'acqua Felice, Plate 148.
