  1. Chiesa di S. Alessio
  2. Convento dei Padri Gerolomini
  3. Portico antico della detta Chiesa

The old public entrance to the 5th century church of S. Sabina is visible through the three-arched portico at the right. This led into the side-aisle of the church, whose main door opened directly into the monastery building to the left of the portico. Twentieth century reconstruction of the church's ancillary buildings have changed the appearance of these and provided a public approach to the main door as can be seen in the modern photograph. The Aventine hill, upon which S. Sabina is located, is the site of numerous monasteries and convents. One of these, S. Alessio (1) and its convent (2) can be seen further along the street (Via di S. Sabina). The early Christian church, whose entrance porch (3) no longer exists, was restored in 1750 by De Marchis and Nolli. In the left foreground a player is about to bowl the last ball in a round of bocce as his cohorts look on.
