Parte della gallaria di Campidoglio |
It is remarkable that in the Magnificenze Vasi does not depict the facade (3) of a church as important as S. Maria d'Aracoeli (2), settling instead for the entrance (1) (Portaria) to its monastery, and the side entrance to the church. The triple-arched portico dates from the mid 16th century, and is attributed to Vignola. Left of center people are entering the side door of the church, which was reconstructed in the early 14th century. At the far left we see the back corner of the Palazzo Nuovo (4), one of the twin structures defining the sides of Michelangelo's Piazza del Campidoglio (see Plate 80 for the frontal view).
