To obtain this striking view of the Via del Corso, Vasi took advantage of the fact that the whole church block actually angles away from the edge of the Corso, which enabled him to get a better view of the church and its flanking College of priests (1) and hospital (2). S. Carlo al Corso, the national church of the Lombards, was built on the site of an early medieval church named S. Niccolò dei Tufi, whose facade was aligned with the edge of the Corso. S. Carlo was begun in 1612, but did not get a facade until 1682. Vasi represents the nave roof of the late 16th century S. Giacomo (3) as being rectangular when in fact it is oval. Opposite stands the church of SS. Nome di Gesù (4). At the end of the corso we see the obelisk placed in Piazza del Popolo, Plate 21, by Sixtus V Peretti (1585-1590).
