Strade che portane alla Chiesa di S. Agostino |
Despite its proximity to Piazza Navona, immediately behind the viewer, Vasi locates this S Apollinare by indicating two streets connecting to Strada dell'Orso also known as Via dei Gigli d'Oro (2) and to the church of S. Agostino on Via di S. Agostino (3). The facade of the Collegio Germanico (on the right, now the Università Pontificia della Santa Croce) bears the Boncompagni coat-of-arms of Gregory XIII (1572-1585) during whose reign it was assigned to the German-Hungarian Jesuits together with the adjacent church. A late 19th century additional story, which can be seen in the contemporary photograph, replaced the clock in the Vasi print. The medieval church of S. Apollinare was rebuilt in the 1740s by Fuga. On the left we see two perpendicular wings of the Palazzo Altemps (1) with its prominent altana which was begun in 1480, and evolved into a complex plan over the following two centuries.
