As the contemporary photography reveals, this rarely depicted section of the Vatican area has changed considerably since Vasi's time. St. Peter's seminary building on the left was increased by two stories in 1929, and the three bay building next to it by one story. At the same time everything between the latter and the church of S. Stefano dei Mori (3) was demolished, as was the line of buildings to the right of that church which included the convent and church of S. Marta. Now called S. Stefano degli Abissini, the medieval church was known as S. Stefano Maggiore, and was largely rebuilt under Pope Clement XI (1700-1721). The building on the right edge of the print was the residence of the cardinal of St. Peter’s basilica (1) shown as a free standing building on the Nolli map above Piazza S. Marta. It was demolished in the early 1930s. The distant line of structures (4) on the Vatican hill, were built along the 9th century Borgo wall of Leo IV (847-855), the round tower being one of its corners. On his map Nolli labels the Forno (bakery) and indicates the Zecca (mint) with the number 1288.
