Chiesa della SS. Trinità ed Ospizio dei Pellegrini
  1. Parte del Monte di Pietà ove si vendono li pegni
  2. Strada che va a Ponte Sisto
  3. Strada della Regola

This is one of a series of piazze along the main street of Rione Regola which both Vasi and Nolli call Strada della Regola (3) the medieval Via Maior Arenulae, also shown in Plate 73. SS. Trinità was built in the late 16th century in place of the medieval church of S. Benedetto in Arenula. It served the hospice which gave shelter to poor pilgrims and provided hospital care to the sick. The piazza, cleared in 1640 to provide an open space in front of the church, was made at the expense of the back corner of the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà (1), visible at left and also shown in Plate 180. De Sanctis added the church's articulated late Baroque facade in 1722. To the left of the church is the entrance to the hospice refectory which Nolli shows clearly as a hall almost as long as the church itself. Except for the refectory and the church, the rest of the hospice, which occupied nearly the whole block, was demolished in 1940 and replaced by a modern apartment building. At the right edge of the print is the opening of Via dei Pettinari (2) which leads to Ponte Sisto, Plates 89, 178.
