Inventory Find of the Week (2018)
Object Name:
puppet
Object ID:
17.613–HISO–127
Case:
The "find" of the week is undoubtedly this mid–20th–century puppet head from Germany, depicting a gnome or elf. It was recovered during archaeological survey at the Children's Health Council on Stanford's campus. The Stanford Home for Convalescent Children stood on the site until around 1960. The facility cared for children with chronic conditions, and (despite its somewhat unnerving current appearance) it is not difficult to imagine this toy entertaining young patients there.
Dimensions:
H–12 W–7.1 L–8.6 cm
Material(s):
rubber
Provenance:
Collected by Laura Jones, Director, Heritage Services and University Archaeologist, at Stanford University from the Children's Health Council site in the summer of 1995 and spring of 1996. This site is located along Clark Way in the vicinity of Sand Hill Road on campus lands in Santa Clara County. Excavation and recovery were undertaken as a Stanford University project by campus archaeologists and supervised by Laura Jones. Received as a field collection by the Stanford University Archaeology Collections.
