Stanford Women’s Rugby opened their season with an away trip to Chico State on Saturday. With great excitement, SWR welcomed back juniors from their fall quarter abroad and looked to integrate a large rookie class. Unfortunately, Stanford ran into a well drilled and experienced Chico State team. The inexperienced Stanford outside backs had a difficult containing the pacey Chico offense. The standouts for Stanford were in the forwards, where the front row were able to take three scrums against the feed and the flankers, Anna Park ’19 and Kathryn Treder ’18, went over for tries.

In the second team match, SWR was excited to start a mostly rookie team. It was fantastic to see winger, Mariah Ward ’21, stretch out for long range tries as the backline looked to exploit the space out wide. In the forwards, the standout with her strong runs was Melinda Hernandez ’21. It will be an exciting future with so many of the freshmen developing throughout the course of the match.
