Frances Mary Hunkey3, born November 7, 1902 in Rockwood Township, Wadena County, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry William Hunke2 and Anna Clara (Mautasch) Hunke.

Frances married (first), about 1916 in —, William Frederick Knuppel (Bill). He was born January 10, 1895 in —, Minnesota, the son of Henry Knuppel and Henrietta H— (Fricke) Knuppel, both natives of Germany.

Children:

  1. William Fredrick Knuppel, Jr. (Bill), born April 22, 1919 in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois.
  2. Delbert L— Knuppel (Bert), born July 27, 1920 in —, South Dakota.
  3. Donald Knupple (Don), born about 1922 or 1923 in —, Illinois.
William Knuppel served in the U.S. Army during World War I, enlisting August 25, 1918 and released May 2, 1919.

The Knuppels appear to have lived initially in Illinois, where their eldest child was born, shortly afterwards removing to South Dakota.

In January, 1920 William, Frances and their son Bill were living in a rented house on Second Street in Milbank, Grant County, South Dakota. William’s occupation was given as laborer in a produce house.

In 1922 William and Mary lived in a house at 120 S E 6th, Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota. William's occupation was given as candler with the Northern Produce Company.

Frances married (second), November 10, 1925 in Aberdeen, Kansas [sic], Alvah Mandeville Davis (Al). He was born August 2, 1897 in Delaware, Delaware Couny, Iowa, the son of Robert Davis and Mary J— (—) Davis.

In 1930 Frances and Alvah Davis lived at #4, 408 South Sanborn Street, Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota, together with her three sons (his stepsons). The two older boys are also recorded as living with their father in Minnesota in that year; presumably they alternated between parents.

In 1935 and 1940 Frances, Alvah and Donald lived at 408 South Sanborn Boulevard, Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota. Donald was now using his stepfather's surname. Alvah's occupation was given as foreman.

Frances’ occupation was cosmetologist.

Frances’ and Al’s Social Security cards were both issued in South Dakota.

Al’s last residence was Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota 57301. He died June –, 1976 in Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Wadena, Wadena County, Minnesota. His grave bears a marker with the following inscription:

Frances died April 17, 1978, aged 75, in Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota, and was buried April 21, 1978 in Calvary Cemetery, Wadena, Wadena County, Minnesota. Her grave bears a marker with the following inscription:

Appendix.

From at least 1926 through 1929 the divorced William Knuppel lived with his widowed mother Henrietta and single sister Bertha at 1639 Upton Avenue N, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Henrietta and Bertha had lived in Minneapolis as early as 1922, when they resided at 1518 Thomas Avenue N and Bertha was working as a stenographer. William worked for the DeSoto Creamery & Produce Company during these years, his occupation given as candler (1926), egg foreman (1927), eggman (1928), and egg candler (1929). Bertha's occupation was given as stenographer. Henrietta Knuppel moved to Morris, Minnesota in 1929, and William and Bertha soon followed.

In 1930 William lived with his mother Henrietta, his sister Bertha, and his two older sons at 211 East Eighth Street, Morris, Stevens County, Minnesota. William's occupation was given as proprietor of a steam laundry, and Bertha's as bookkeeper in the laundry.

In 1935 and 1940 the divorced William Knuppel lived with his mother Henrietta and his oldest son Bill at 508 Montano Avenue in Morris, Stevens County, Minnesota. In the latter year William's occupation was given as foreman, produce station, and his son Bill's as landscaper, nursery. William's second son Delbert also lived in Morris in 1935, presumably with the family; in 1940 he is recorded as living both with the family and on his own at the YMCA at 30 South 9th Street in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, where he worked as a beautician.

Later in 1940 William, Henrietta, Bertha and William's two older sons were all living in Minneapolis again, now at 2933 34th Avenue S, Minneapolist. William's occupation was given as salesman, Bill's as florist, Bertha's as clerk, and Delbert's as clerk.

In 1944 William resided at the YMCA in Des Moines, Iowa. His occupation was given as assistant regional supervisor the the US Department of Agriculture.

William Knuppel married (second), June 27, 1944 near Macedonia, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Viva Irene Stone (Vi). She was born September 14, 1911 or 1912 in Sparta, Alleghany County, North Carolina, the daughter of Floyd F— Stone and Mary Suffina (Andrews) Stone. The wedding took place in the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Guy McCain. Bride and groom were both of Des Moines at the time. They honeymooned at the Minnesota Lakes, returning by August 1. Afterward they made their home at 2604 47th Street, Des Moines.

In 1946 William, his wife Viva and William's two older sons lived at 2604 4th, Des Moines, Iowa. William's occupation was given as supervisor; his oldest son was in the US Marine Corps and Delbert in the US Army.

In 1948 William, his wife Viva, sister Bertha and son Delbert were living at 166 Stanley, Redwood City, California. Delbert's occupation was given as flight steward with Pan American Airways and Bertha's as clerk.

William’s Social Security card was issued in Minnesota.

Viva’s Social Security card was issued in California.

From at least 1951 through 1953 they were living at 686 Guerrero, San Francisco, California (in Apt. 2 in the latter year). William’s sister Bertha Knuppel lived nearby, at 690 Guerrero, Apt. 5. In 1954 William’s residence was given as Boyes Hot Springs, and in 1955/56 as Sonoma. During these years he was working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in San Francisco. His position was described as marketing specialist in 1951, the person in charge of the Poultry Grading Division in 1953, area supervisor of the Poultry Grading Section in 1954, and area supervisor in the area office of the Poultry Grading Branch, Agricultural/Marketing Service, in 1955/56. Viva was a typist for the General Services Administration in 1951.

Viva Knuppel’s last residence was Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California 95405. She died April 15, 1986 in Sonoma County, California, at the age of seventy-three years. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa. Her grave bears a marker with the following inscription:

William Knuppel’s last residence was Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California 95405. He died June 3, 1986 in Lake County, Montana.
