Where can I find out more about Indian weddings?

Check out the following wedding websites:

What do those foreign words in the program mean?

Jaan A procession of the groom and his family to the bride’s family, where the groom seeks the blessing of his mother-in-law
Garba A form of folk dance from Gujarat India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garba_(dance))
Raas Also called Dandiya Raas, this is another folk dance from Gujarat that uses sticks (http://www.littleindia.com/september2005/RaasGarba.htm)

Who is this an image of?

This image is of the Hindu Lord Ganesha, who among many other things is the Lord of good fortune and destroyer of obstacles.  His blessing is sought before the undertaking of any task so that good fortune may result.  As such, his image often graces wedding invitation cards.  Additionally, the bride and groom’s families hold separate pujas (or religious ceremonies) to seek is his blessing prior to the main wedding ceremony.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganesh)

Can anyone help me get ‘wrapped’ if I plan to wear a sari?

Yes, just let Masumi know you both can coordinate the details. Those brave enough to practice can check out the links below.

What is the best time to arrive to the wedding?

We understand that our Monday wedding may pose some difficulty to those who have to work.

Guests on Nikesh’s side wanting to participate in the jaan or guests on Masumi’s side wanting to welcome the jaan should begin arriving after 2pm, with 2:15pm being the ‘ideal’ time.

Guests coming for the ceremony should begin arriving after 3pm.

Guests coming for the reception should begin arriving after 5pm.

Note: Masumi and Nikesh are painstakingly planning so their wedding does not take place according to ISD (Indian Standard Time).

What can I do if I’m all dressed and have time to kill prior to the wedding?

Guests driving up from south of New Hampshire can stop by the Loop in Methuen MA for shopping or dining.  You can shop your heart out on Route 28 in tax-free Salem NH, which leads to the Mall at Rockingham Park.

If you dare, mini-golf and batting cages can be found at Cedarland in Haverhill MA.

Guests arriving at Atkinson Resort and Country Club before 2pm can enjoy lunch at Merrill’s Tavern or the Stagecoach Grille Restaurant.  Guest can also enjoy a game of virtual golf and billiards at Merrill’s Tavern or hit a bucket or two of balls at the driving range.

What fireworks celebrations are there if I plan to stay for the 4th of July?

City of Boston à http://www.july4th.org/

Methuen and neighboring towns in the Merrimack Valley (will post more detail when available)
