Reading Sontag's "Against Interpretation" while thinking about Robert Wilson's work produces the curious effect of leading one to believe that Wilson had perhaps created a form of theater consciously intended to foil the apparent legion of interpreters Sontag takes issue with. As clear as it is in context that Sontag is not outlining criteria for an uninterpretable artform, but arguing for a new approach to works which could submit themselves to interpretation, I can't help but think that, faced with Wilson's work, academics prone to interpretation would be forced to devise a new method for interfacing with artworks, which could then be reapplied to a wide variety of other works.
