Course Description: Known only for one novel--Frankenstein--Mary Shelley was a major figure of her age. As daughter of Enlightenment radicals Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, wife of Percy Shelley, and friend of major Romantic figures such as Lord Byron, Charles Lamb and William Hazlitt, her own life developed amidst a period of great cultural and intellectual ferment. This course will explore how Shelley's fiction reflects the exciting historical --scientific, political, philosophical, cultural and intellectual--context surrounding her.
