On February 22nd, 2011, a 6.3 Mw aftershock struck near downtown Christchurch, New Zealand, five months after the 7.1 Mw Darfield Canterbury earthquake, killing almost 200 people and causing billions of dollars of damage. Building damage was extensive and portions of the Central Business District remained closed months later. Shortly after the earthquake, Degenkolb Engineers assembled a team of six engineers who traveled to New Zealand on a reconnaissance trip. John Leuenberger and Lucie Fougner were part of this team and will share their observations and experiences from Christchurch.
