Lectures

• Lectures will be delivered via Zoom Meetings, at the scheduled class time (MTWTh 11:30am-12:20pm PDT, GMT-7)
• You are highly encouraged to participate in live lectures via the Zoom links provided on the Zoom tab of the course Canvas page. Students will be able to ask questions, participate in interactive exercises, and engage with members of the teaching team during the live lecture.
• If you able to come to the live lecture, the teaching team will also stick around for 10-15 minutes after class, at which point you can come and ask the course staff questions about the recently concluded lecture.
• If you would like to re-watch a lecture or were not able to attend class for a day, recordings will be available after the scheduled course time. We are working on ensuring that the lecture videos are posted soon after each class ends.

Common questions about lectures

What tools will I need?

If you want to watch the video live, you should be able to use Zoom in some form or another. It would be best to have a video feed if watching live. Although calling in from your phone would work, seeing the slides and code in real-time will be beneficial. If you must call in, you should also try to have the slides up on your computer at the same time. Alternatively, you can download the videos after the class ends, and re-watch them asynchronously.

How can I ask questions during lecture?

There are a number of different methods that you can use to ask questions during lecture. If you want to ask your question live, you can use the Zoom Participants panel to virtually raise your hand. One of the members of the teaching team will call on you, at which point you can unmute yourself and ask your question. Alternatively, you can also ask your question digitally using the Zoom Chat feature. One of the members of the teaching staff will be monitoring the chat and will do their best to get you an answer in a timely manner. We ask that you respect established Zoom etiquette and only make use of the chat feature to ask and answer questions.

What if I live in a time zone such that is inconvenient to watch the class live?

You can download the videos to watch at any time after the class meeting time (after we have posted them).

Can I run code examples myself?

Yes – we will either have a Qt project for you to download, or you should be able to keep a blank project open in Qt and type the code as we do. In general, we advise against doing this during class, but if you are watching the video and want to pause the video to test the code, that would work well. Additionally, we will be experimenting with using Ed Workspaces to give students a live, collaborative coding environment to use during class to follow along with and participate in lecture examples.
