PC-Leland
Commands
The following commands
can be selected from the PC-Leland menu:
About PC-Leland
Here you can find the version number of PC-Leland and other information
about the product, plus a photograph of Hoover Tower and the Quad, taken
by Don Geddis, a Stanford alumnus.
Help
The Help command opens the web-based help file that should be stored in
the PC-Leland folder created as part of PC-Leland’s installation. The
default browser on your computer will be launched to display a help page
stored on your computer. From there, you can access the entire User Guide
through the Internet.
This command enables you to sign on. It verifies that you are a member
of the Stanford community by requesting your SUNet
ID and password. Unlike logging in to a particular computer, such
as elaine, or Cardinal, PC-Leland enables you to sign on to multiple machines
and services without having to enter a SUNet ID and password each time.
When you enter them and press the OK button, PC-Leland passes this information
(encrypted) to a Kerberos authentication
server, which sends back a Kerberos ticket if the ID and password combination
is correct. (See the PC-Leland FAQ section for
more information.)
Renew Login...
To renew your Kerberos tickets before they expire and log you out from
PC-Leland, you can choose this command, which again prompts you for your
SUNet ID password.
Logout: SUNet
ID
This command, which replaces Login on the menu when you are logged
in, ends the PC-Leland session of the specified SUNet ID, discarding all
Kerberos tickets that were created for that ID during the PC-Leland session.
It does not affect any open Samson
or Eudora sessions, but they will ask
you to logon to PC-Leland again the next time you start a telnet
session or check for new mail. (This will appear as Logout: followed
by the specific SUNet ID that is logged in. For example, Logout: lelandjr
or Logout: gcasper.)
Show Status
This command shows PC-Leland's status, including:
- the Kerberos authentication
tickets that are in effect for your PC-Leland session, with the time
they were issued and the time when they will expire;
- Stanford Web Authentication
tickets that are in effect.

Change Password
This command lets you change the password associated with your SUNet ID.
This is the same as changing your SUNet ID password at the Stanford.you
web pages, or logging in to elaine-best.stanford.edu and issuing the passwd
command.New passwords need to conform to the following rules:
- It must be 7-40
characters long.
- It must NOT be
a word--not even a word in a foreign language.
- You can't get around
the "word rule" by adding one or two characters at the beginning or
end of your password. (For example, 9cheval, 99cheval, cheval9 and cheval99
are invalid.)
If you're like most
people, you choose a somewhat personal password and stick with it. These
passwords can be made safe. For example, a password based on your cat's
name could be disguised like so: flu77ffy, flu@#ffy, or Flu*&FFy. By adding
capitals and random punctuation to the middle of a password, you can keep
it safe AND memorable. See the SUNet ID passwords web page for more tips on creating
a secure and memorable password.
Note: If you successfully
change your password or if you cancel Change Password, you will be logged
out of PC-Leland and must log in again to continue using PC-Leland. This
is a current limitation to be addressed in a later release. If you have
enabled Single Sign-on, PC-Leland will automatically change your Windows
95/98 password as well.
Lock PC
This command effectively disables your PC; no one else can use your PC until:
- the last user
enters their SUNet ID password, or
- the PC is restarted
This gives you an
easy way to lock your PC, protecting your PC-Leland session when you leave
it temporarily. This is not a foolproof way to prevent your computer from
being used. You can rely on this command to prevent others from using
any PC-Leland enabled facilities, such as Eudora or Samson, on your PC
with your SUNet ID. Note: In the PC-Leland Settings
dialog box under the Security tab, you can find a setting to disable the
Lock PC command so that no one using your PC can lock it.
Mount
Not used. Use Stanford OpenAFS to mount AFS directories.Stanford OpenAFS can be downloaded from the Essential
Stanford Software web page.
Settings
This command brings up the Settings dialog box allowing you
to configure PC-Leland to your specific needs. (See the PC-Leland
Settings section of this document for more detailed information.)
Quit
This will close the PC-Leland program and destroy any existing kerberos
tickets. To restart PC-Leland, select
Programs -> Startup -> PC-Leland from the Windows Start menu or
simply restart your computer.Note: In the PC-Leland
Settings dialog box under the Menus tab, you can find a setting to
disable the Quit command so that no one using your PC can quit PC-Leland.
