User Guide Starting and Using PC-Leland |
Starting and Using PC-LelandStarting PC-LelandPC-Leland is designed to start automatically when you start up your computer. When PC-Leland is running, there will be an icon with an image of the Quad and Hoover Tower To log in, click on the PC-Leland icon in the taskbar (or click the right mouse button on the PC-Leland icon and select Login from the pop-up menu). Type your SUNet ID and password in the dialog box that is presented and click OK. When you are logged in to PC-Leland, the icon will change to an image of the Quad and a double arrow.
The first time you
run PC-Leland, you will encounter a "Profile" wizard. The profile
wizard customizes PC-Leland for use on your computer by walking you through
the most commonly used settings. You may also run the profile wizard later
by clicking on the "Profile Wizard..." button in the
PC-Leland Settings dialog box. To take advantage of this feature on your Windows desktop, select Settings from the PC-Leland menu, select Security from the left pane and click on the box next to Enable Single Sign-On. Then click OK. For this feature to work as intended, your Windows account and password must match your SUNet ID and password.
Windows 2000/NT4.0 Users: See your NT System Administrator about changing your Windows account and password. Ask the system administrator to give you temporary access so you can change your own account and password, DO NOT give your SUNet ID password to the system administrator (or anyone else). Dial-up Users and Laptop Computer Users: To prevent difficulties due to intermittent connection to the network, the Single Sign-on option is not available if you selected the "Not always connected" option during installation. Note: If you change your SUNet ID password at the Stanford. You web pages, you must also change your Windows password on your PC via the Windows Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Passwords (Windows NT/2000 Users: see your System Administrator). However, if you change your password on your PC using Change Password in the PC-Leland menu, your Windows password will be automatically changed as well. Screen Lock Based on the information you provided in the PC-Leland setup wizard after installing PC-Leland, PC-Leland will be configured to either lock or not lock your PC when the screen saver is activated. If you chose the Screen Lock option, the screen saver will lock the screen – and allow the user(s) you specify to unlock it. If you selected the setup options for a laptop or an off-campus location, the screen saver will not lock the screen, but you will be logged out of PC-Leland. To change the Screen Lock setting, select Settings from the PC-Leland menu, then select Security from the left pane. In the Security dialog box, there are two options for the screen saver:
Windows 2000/NT4.0 Users: We recommend using the Windows screen lock instead of PC-Leland's screen lock because it is fully integrated with the operating system.
Dial-up Users and Mobile Laptop Computer Users: To prevent difficulties due to intermittent connection to the network, only the setting "Logout on screen saver" is available if you selected the "Laptop" or "Off-campus" option in the setup wizard. By default, the maximum amount of idle time allowed before the screen lock is invoked is 60 minutes. However, the PC-Leland installer will not change the amount of idle time that has already been specified (by you or the Windows default) to invoke the screen saver unless it is longer than 60 minutes. You can change the idle time requirement via the Windows Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display -> Screen Saver. In the Screen Saver dialog box, change the number of minutes specified in the Wait ____ minutes section. |
