Imaging and Sensing

The Kool lab has a long-standing interest in developing new molecules and methods for fluorescence labeling and sensing of biomolecules. We have developed numerous fluorescent DNA bases, and have used them in combinations to develop thousands of combinatorial fluorophores with properties not available in standard commercial dyes. We are also incorporating fluorescent DNA bases into modified synthetic oligonucleotides to detect and image cellular DNA repair enzymes in real time; these are being studied as markers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Finally, we are developing new molecular reagents that can be used to detect and analyze aldehydes in the cell; high levels of aldehydes – and defects in their metabolism – can lead to serious diseases including cancer.
