The seven routes in 1885 were (1) the UP and CP, (2) ATSF and SP, (3) SP and TP, (4) SP to New Orleans, (5) Burlington, D & RG, and CP, (6) NP, (7) A&P and SP. To these would quickly be added the Canadian Pacific and the Oregon Short Line. By the early 1890s there was also the Great Northern.
