Imago Urbis: Giuseppe Vasi's Grand Tour of Rome

  112.   Chiesa di S. Maria in Monticelli

  1. Convento e Chiesa parrocchiale di S. Maria in Monticelli
  2. Palazzo del Marchese Paniza
  3. Palazzo Santacroce e piazza de' Branca

The medieval church of S. Maria in Monticelli (1) received a late Baroque facade by Sassi and Sardi in 1715. In 1726 it was turned over to the French Pères de la Doctrine Chrétienne by Benedict XIII Orsini (1724-1730). A small gate next to the 17th century Palazzo Paniza (2) closes off a street which appears open on the Nolli map. Today a low building stands at each end of the lost street. On the right, the dome of S. Carlo ai Catinari, Plate 136, appears in the distance. Partly hiding this dome is the 1630s Palazzo Santacroce (3) whose main door is shown on the Nolli map to face onto Piazza Branca (NN742) where Vasi shows 3 tiny figures.
