Imago Urbis: Giuseppe Vasi's Grand Tour of Rome

123a.   Chiesa di S. Onofrio, e Canvento dei Padri Eremiti Gerolimini

Chiesa di S. Onofrio, e Convento dei Padri Eremiti Gerolimini

Located at the end of the dedicated Via di S. Onofrio (NN 1231) which climbs steeply up the Janiculum hill, is the early 15th century church and monastery of S. Onofrio. The cordonata (stair-ramp) in the print is aligned on the street, and leads to the unusual L-shaped portico which was added to the complex in the 16th century. Vasi's view of Porta S. Spirito, Plate 15, shows this same inclined street to the left as it begins its ascent to the monastic complex which enjoys one of the finest views of the city from its broad terrace.
