Imago Urbis: Giuseppe Vasi's Grand Tour of Rome

  131.   Convento dei PP. Francescani del Terzo Ordine

  1. Chiesa di S. Pavolo alla Regola e Convento dei detti Padri
  2. Strada dei Vaccinari
  3. Parte del Convento dei PP. della Dottrina Cristiana presso S.M. in Monticelli

Familiarly referred to as S. Paolino "little St. Paul", this church's official title of S. Paolo alla Regola (1) reveals its location in Rione Regola. Specifically it faces a piazza whose edge is defined by a section of the Via Maior Arenulae, the main street of that rione, Plate 111. Vasi labels a section of this street Strada dei Vaccinari (2) "the road of the Tanners" because it led to the section of the city where that trade was carried out, Plate 90. A curving, Baroque facade was added to the late 17th century church in 1721. The tall building on the left is the back of the monastery attached to S. Maria in Monticelli (3) Plate 112.
