Imago Urbis: Giuseppe Vasi's Grand Tour of Rome

133a.   [Chiesa di S. Silvestro, e Noviziato dei PP. Teatini]

  1. Chiesa di S. Silvestro e Noviziato dei PP Teatini
  2. Strada di Monte Cavallo

In the Middle Ages this church was called S. Silvestro de Caballo (1) a reference to the horse-tamer statues in the nearby Baths of Constantine (Caballo referring to Cavallo meaning horse). Later known as S. Silvestro al Quirinale, it was rebuilt under Clement VII Medici (1523-1534). In the middle ages, the horse-tamer statues were moved into Piazza di Monte Cavallo, known today as the Piazza del Quirinale, Pate 61, thus giving the name to both the piazza and the street (2) visible in this print. At the end of the street we see the Quirinal Palace stables with its wooden portico also visible in Plate 61.
