Horse statues in Piazza di Monte Cavallo |
Dominating this long view of Via Pia (now Via del Quirinale) is S. Andrea al Quirinale (1) designed by Bernini in 1658. The concave wall enabled that architect to set his facade back from the narrow street, which Borromini in the nearby S. Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, Plate 36A, was not able to do because he was working with a smaller plot of land. The nunneries of the Cappuccins (2) and the Dominicans (3) were demolished in the late 19th century and replaced by a small park (Giardino del Quirinale). On the right side of Via Pia the braccio lungo (long arm) of the Quirinal palace, extends all the way to Piazza Monte Cavallo, Piazza del Quirinale, Plate 61, where the two horse tamer statues are barely visible (4). The obelisk which stands there now between the statues does not appear in the print because it was set up later under Pius VI Braschi (1775-1799).
