Tribuna dell Chiesa di S. Grisogono in Trastevere |
In this print Vasi depicts the women's ward (2) on the left, and one bay of the longer men's ward (1) of the hospital of S. Gallicano, designed in 1724 by the architect Raguzzini. Between the two wards is the facade of the church dedicated to S. Gallicano, whose portal is aligned on the facing street (Vicolo di Mazzamurelli). The 15th century hospital complex of S. Spirito in Borgo, Plate 17 served as the model for this building type showing the pattern of twin wings separated according to gender with connecting chapel. The upper balconies on what appears to be a two story space, are actually access galleries for opening and closing windows to the large single story spaces for each ward. The circular disks on each of the pilasters are perforated to provide ventilation for a small toilet set into the thickness of the walls, a considerable innovation in hospital architecture of the time. At the left edge of this view is the back wall of the early Christian church of S. Crisogono (3) Plate 119. The building at the end of the street was demolished in the late 19th century to make way for the Viale del Re (now called Viale Trastevere) the main street of the expanded neighborhood of Trastevere.
