Located outside the walls near the Porta Salaria, Plate 3, Villa Albani is represented on the 1748 map by Nolli as it was before the building of the casino illustrated here. A close look at the map reveals that the words ora Alessandro Albani Card. were added to the names of the earlier owners after the completion of the original copper plate. The cardinal acquired the villa in 1747 and built the casino between 1755 and 1757, using largely his own designs, as Vasi relates in the accompanying text. The two porticoed wings (3) housed part of the cardinal's vast collection of ancient statues. Nolli himself was asked to design the new garden, part of which we see in this view. Vasi strongly foreshortens the parterres of the long rectangular formal garden so as to allow for the inclusion of the central fountain (1) which actually is much further away from the casino. Since 1866 the villa has belonged to the Torlonia family, and is now entirely surrounded by 20th century suburbs north of the city.
