Nothing remains today of Villa Patrizi, which was located at the beginning of Via Nomentana, just outside Porta Pia, Plate 4. Both Vasi and Nolli depicts the axial symmetry of the terraced casino complex, whose central axis and main entry (1) however, was not quite perpendicular to that of Via Nomentana. The reason for this offset is that the casino and its rectangular grid of avenues aligned with the ancient Via Nomentana. This former street, which formed one of the gardens' cross axes, once exited through a gate in the Aurelian walls, indicated with a star (*) by Nolli indicating that it had been walled up in his day. Michelangelo's Porta Pia, just north of the old gate, replaced it in 1561-1564. In his text Vasi quotes a vanished inscription which indicates that the villa was built by Cardinal Giovanni Patrizi in 1717. Facing onto the lower terrace (2) are the servants' quarters and stables (3). A cordonata (4) (stepped ramp) at far right allowed carriages to reach the upper terrace.
