Advancing Care, Research and Training
Each year, the Foundation raises
funds to a) ensure that Lucile
Packard Children’s Hospital and
child health programs at the Stanford
School of Medicine are able to provide
the finest, family-centered care to
children and expectant mothers;
b) train
the next generation of pediatric and
obstetric medical leaders; and c) conduct
research into treatments and cures for
diseases of childhood and pregnancy.
Community support has helped transform Packard Children’s into one of the nation’s preeminent children’s hospitals, and has sustained its commitment to care for any child in the community, regardless of their financial means.
In September 2012, Packard Children’s broke ground on a 521,000-square-foot expansion that will double the hospital’s size. The project will add 150 patient rooms, specialized operating rooms, and the most advanced technology available. The new, environmentally friendly facility, surrounded by nearly four acres of gardens and green space, is scheduled to open in 2016. Additional room for clinical services, medical research, and training and education will transform care for children and families.
The Foundation’s Breaking New Ground campaign is helping to fund the expansion, and to support training and research at the School of Medicine. In 2012, thanks to an outpouring of community support, the Breaking New Ground campaign concluded with a final total of $549 million, far exceeding its original goal.
Overall in 2012, donations for Packard Children’s and child health programs at the School of Medicine totaled $87.6 million, thanks to the generosity of 11,418 individuals, foundations, and corporations.

Meeting the Challenge
Chris Dawes, president and CEO of Packard Children’s Hospital, presents Susan P. Orr with a model of the new hospital at the groundbreaking ceremonies in September. Ms. Orr is co-chair of the Breaking New Ground campaign and chairman of the board of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, which committed $100 million as a challenge match to inspire and leverage donor support for the building expansion. This was the single largest gift to the Breaking New Ground campaign.

Packard Summer Scamper
In June, more than 2,400 community members, grateful families, and Packard employees gathered on the Stanford campus to participate in the 2nd annual Packard Summer Scamper. Organized by the Foundation and benefiting Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, the race consisted of a 5K, 10K, and kids’ fun run, followed by a post-race expo featuring refreshments, sponsor and vendor booths, a kids’ fitness zone, and music and entertainment. Scamper participants, aided by more than 150 volunteers, ran, walked and sponsored their way to raising more than $165,000 for the Children’s Fund. See a video of the event at Packard Summer Scamper 2012.
Hospital Auxiliaries
Seven community-based Auxiliaries operate businesses and stage benefit events to support uncompensated care and special projects at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and provide service for Hospital patients and families.
In 2012, the Auxiliaries and their individual members donated more than $2.6 million. San Jose Auxiliary runs the Thrift Box and hosts Pumpkin Patch each fall; Allied Arts Guild Auxiliary operates Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park and stages Tally Ho annually; Charter Auxiliary runs monthly rummage sales; Palo Alto Auxiliary manages several popular fundraisers, including American Girl Doll events and Restaurants with Heart dining events; Roth Auxiliary staffs the Gift Shop in Packard Children’s Hospital; San Mateo-Burlingame Auxiliary hosts fundraising events including Game Day; and the San Francisco Auxiliary presents the annual Jewel Ball gala.
In addition, the Association of Auxiliaries oversees the Auxiliaries Endowment which currently stands at $13.7 million. It comprises bequests and donations from members of the all-volunteer Auxiliaries and their families. Since the endowment was formed in 1999, more than $7.5 million in payout has supported new Hospital programs, purchased equipment, funded major patient services and facilities, and endowed a fund honoring Harvey Cohen, MD, PhD, former chief of staff.
In 2012, the Auxiliaries Endowment payout of $779,750 was directed toward a $5 million pledge to the Hospital’s expansion project.
Also in 2012, Auxiliary members and supporters donated 1,484 baby blankets, baptismal gowns, and other gifts for Packard patients.
This year, the Association of Auxiliaries announced the exciting launch of four new Affiliate organizations benefitting the Hospital. These include the Packard Pantry, Reach Out and Read, Time Out, and the Teen Health Van projects, all designed to offer more opportunities for a broad base of new and existing community volunteers to provide meaningful service and support to Packard Children’s Hospital.
