As in the Recherche, so in Jean Santeuil the protagonist is in search of a world that offers genuine novelty. He investigates places (travel), society, friendship, love, nature, memory, art. Travel, society, and friendship yield essentially nothing; love, nature, and memory give you yourself; only artworks yield a world that is both consistent and separate.
