Stat 316 : Rules and ideas for projects

  • This class is an introduction to research in probability theory. You are requested to do a research project, collaborating in groups of two or three students.

  • You are requested to submit a ‘project proposal’ by Thursday, October 26. The proposal is a one page text, including the students’ names, a description of the topic, and a short list of references that you intend to study.

  • Projects will be presented at the end of the term, tentatively on Nov 28, 30 and December 5, 7.

  • Projects can vary in scope. At a minimum, you must do a literature survey. However, we also encourage you to do some independent work/thinking. We do not expect everybody to solve an open problem, but we are very interested in hearing about failed attempts!

  • Take the last point seriously. Several projects from previous editions of this class became actual math papers!

  • A list ideas/suggestions can be found here (more will be added if useful).
