Stat 316 : Rules and ideas for projects

This class is an introduction to research in probability theory. You are requested to do a research project, collaborating in groups of two or three students.

You are requested to submit a ‘project proposal’ by Thursday, October 26. The proposal is a one page text, including the students’ names, a description of the topic, and a short list of references that you intend to study.

Projects will be presented at the end of the term, tentatively on Nov 28, 30 and December 5, 7.

Projects can vary in scope. At a minimum, you must do a literature survey. However, we also encourage you to do some independent work/thinking. We do not expect everybody to solve an open problem, but we are very interested in hearing about failed attempts!

Take the last point seriously. Several projects from previous editions of this class became actual math papers!
