Project #1: Text-Image Poem
I had a dream. I stood in the middle of a crossroad in New York City for an entire day, sunset till dawn. I just stood there, invisible and intangible, my soul observing and absorbing time and space.
I used cogwheels to represent time since it connects the natural and artificial aspect of time. Time is an artificial concept about our natural world. Humans defined and expressed time as cogwheels constantly rotating and interlocking with each other. I used supernova to represent space since it connects distant stars by supporting the theory of universe expansion. Supernova is an artificial label humans decided to name a natural phenomenon. Although distant stars are far apart, humans desire to reach other stars to anticipate the fate of the universe.
Within time and space, in between cogwheels and supernovae, there’s us—our souls. When we are attached to the grounds of Earth, our souls are attached to our bodies. When we are floating across the sky, our souls escape our bodies and become free but lost, confused but secured. I used the sky to invite our wandering souls that are freely contained with the two artificial concepts—time and space—defined by cogwheels and explained by supernovae.
