Project #3: Visual Music

My Winter Blues

The universal desire for something beautiful. Our emotional desire for finding beauty in life resulted in the elaboration of the concept of love. We romanticize love. In reality, love is neither romantic nor permanent; love is natural, ephemeral, and naive—just as our dreams. Filled with lighthearted ambience, “Bye Bye Blues” reminded me of these three adjectives, so I decided to edit a video about how we dream about love. I trimmed the video clips from three video sources and rearranged them to narrate the story of a woman’s dream. She is on a train on her way to NYC for her winter holidays.

In the video, the woman falls in love. She narrates her journey of love in her dream through her elegant, ornamented dance sequences, which resemble the romanticized nature of love. Several train scenes with a Christmas tree are interwoven throughout the video for context. These scenes also heighten the ethereal space of the scenes through abrupt interruptions that are half-synchronous with the audio. To imitate the capricious state of our subconscious mind when dreaming, I inserted a scene of the universe and a voice over that narrates how people’s desire for something beautiful is shown through the arts, in our wonderful world. The ending is neither sad nor happy. Just as love stories fleet away regardless of their endings, this dream fades out as the camera zooms out.
