The main concept of this project is finding my ‘self’ within this vast universe. I believe that people’s inherent identities are formed during their childhood. I was raised in Korean society under my Buddist grandmother; I’m not religious but I do resonate with what Buddhists value, and I’m open to new circumstances but my heart lies in Korean sentiments. This part of me will never fade away, and although my grandmother is no longer here, she will hold my hands when I fall or get lost in darkness. I will meet diverse people and go through lots of events, but I have no doubt that my innermost identity as a Korean who has pride towards my mother-country will remain inside me.
To express this, I will fill the space created by Kelly Moran’s Helix with my own Korean identity expressed through the folk tune ‘Arirang.’ The music will be a ‘remix’ of Helix influenced by folktronica and neo-psychedelic music. In the video, I will metaphorically represent myself as the Korean floral emblem ‘Rose of Sharon,’ which symbolizes the strength to be never-ending. The intermedia usage will be unempathetic; the sound and image will suggest that I am getting closer to finding my ego, whilst the text will narrate that my identities are floating away. Such juxtaposition indicates how some parts of my identity will change over time after experiencing diverse happenings, which will also help me to identify the hidden core part of myself.
