Project #2: Sound Poem

Everything changes in life because the phase ‘transition’ connects the end and start of everything. Especially love. Even the seemingly eternal love is impermanent since its form changes—the ways we love, the reasons we love, or do we? Based on such inspiration, I layered 9 tracks to portray the beginning of a new love after the last one ended. Both closing and opening sounds of a door and heart beeping (the noise we listen to when we come to and end life) bridge the ‘end’ and ‘start’ of love. The subtle layer of streaming water senses the time passing as this transition occurs. The recording of a late-night dining hall represents the moment new love sparked.

I recorded the door sounds and the dining hall talks at Florence Moore Dining Hall. I downloaded the sound clips of a beating heart and streaming water from ‘freesound.org’. I recorded the five voice layers in my dorm room. I panned the door sound from left to right whilst panning the water stream from right to left in order to add dimensions to the sounds. This cross-over of panned audios represents how the emotions associated with love flows away and flows back. With the narrator guiding the phases of love, four voices sing in different flows to indicate the turbulent nature of love.
