CLUB HIGHLIGHT

Willett Math Club - Davis, CA

The Basics: Willett Math Club was founded in 2005 at Robert E. Willett Elementary School in Davis, CA. The club is run by members of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society at Davis Senior High, the local high school, and aims to promote creative thinking and problem solving as well as enthusiasm for math. Members of Willett Math Club, willettmath2who are in grades 4-6, meet once a week on Thursdays after school, in faculty sponsor Marla Cook's 6th-grade classroom.

A Typical Meeting: The club begins each meeting with a warmup to get their brains ready and charged up. After a Mu Alpha Theta member gives a brief talk explaining relevant math concepts for the day, whether it be arithmetic tricks and divisibility or The Game of Nim, the kids divide into teams and tackle problems on a prepared worksheet. At the end of the day, club members take turns explaining their solutions to the problems, and the team with the most correct answers on the worksheet receives small prizes. (generally "hewillettmath3althy" prizes such as stickers or pencils - candy is avoided if possible!) All students can also receive stamps on a Stamp Sheet for correct warmup and worksheet solutions, and a completed stamp sheet can be traded in for a prize.

Behind the Scenes: Mu Alpha Theta members involved in running the club take turns creating the warmup and worksheet each week. Current co-director, sophomore Angela Yeung (pictured left), says, "Our goal is to create curriculum that will nurture the kids' interests in math, and help stretch their mind in mathematical ways. This can be a great jump start for future math and science studies and contests, but it is also really an important skill that will be useful in almost any field!"
