Particle laden high-speed flows

Understanding high-speed particle-laden flows is relevant for entry to Mars atmosphere, where dust storms are frequent and is also relevant for hypersonic flight within Earth’s atmosphere, where particulates, droplets, or ice-crystals may be present. Recently, we simulated high- speed nitrogen flow seeded with dust particles over a sphere, showing that surface heat flux is amplified by the presence of the dust particles due to interphase momentum transfer and inelastic particle-wall collisions. We employed recently developed physics-based correlation for estimating drag force experienced by the particles.
