Cancer Detection

A silicon nanowire sensor could help detect specific genes. In preliminary experiments, nucleic acids were attached to a nanowire in the sequence of the desired gene. When fragments of genes with and without the coded gene were exposed, the sensor was able to differentiate between the two types of genes. Using this technique it is possible to identify viral particles, prion particles, and other antigens. With these sensors, PCR is not needed, so the detection time needed is much lower.
