SBSE
ON-CAMPUS EVENTS
Weekly
Engineering Tutorials, Wednesdays 7-10 PM. in Terman 217
These "study jams" provide undergraduate engineering students
with one-on-one and group tutoring with graduate students in engineering,
math and science courses and other courses by arrangement. The
graduate tutors have a solid foundation in the basic topics of their
field and come from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds and can
therefore provide a breadth of knowledge. The undergraduate students
can learn about fundamental concepts while gaining incite into more
advanced topics in a friendlier, less formal setting than the lecture
hall. The graduate students strongly encourage asking questions and
promote discussions to help develop the undergraduate students’
problem solving skills and confidence. During the weekly study nights
students can form study groups with their peers from inside the chapter
and members of other underrepresented engineering student societies.
Undergraduate students therefore have the opportunity to network with
other students and create long term study groups while further developing
their understanding of subjects in their courses. Please

Quarterly
Community Service Activities
During the Winter quarter last year,
our chapter participated in a clean-up effort at a community technology
center in East Palo Alto. The center was Plugged-In and several volunteers
cleared weeds, debris and shrubbery from the center's premises giving
it a groomed look. For more info please contact, Marcelo Worsley,
mworsley@stanford.edu
Technical
OutReach Community Help (T.O.R.C.H.) Program
This quarter SBSE is pursuing mentoring and tutoring at the Intel
Clubhouse at East Palo Alto's Boys and Girls Club. Once a week, members
from our chapter visit the Clubhouse and help kids with multimedia
projects, music compositions, and Lego design and programming. The
SBSE membership serve as mentors to encourage the kids to explore
their own ideas, develop skills, and build confidence in themselves
through the use of technology. For more info please contact, Marcelo
Worsley, mworsley@stanford.edu
Stanford
Summer Engineering Academy (SSEA)
The Engineering Diversity Program office at Stanford hosts SSEA, which
is a summer program for incoming minority freshmen interested in science
and engineering. In an effort to get these students interested in
NSBE, and to consider becoming members of our chapter, we sent two
of our Executive Board members to speak to the students during one
of their academic sessions, and to present the goals and programs
of NSBE in such a way that the students would be excited to join.
In addition, another one of our Executive Board members was a tutor
and Residential advisor during the program. This initial interaction
with potential science and engineering majors has traditionally been
extremely important in facilitating the interest of incoming freshmen
in NSBE. Students participating in these programs begin the school
year with knowledge of the organization and therefore make a concentrated
effort to attend the meetings and have an immediate impact in the
chapter. Please contact Macharia Edmonds

Stanford
Activities Fairs
SBSE delegates Executive Board members to be in attendance, for the
duration, at all of the activity fairs that take place on campus.
The first week of school is critical in recruiting new members and
we make a conscientious effort to be in attendance at these fairs.
At all of the fairs, we provided NSBE magazines, pamphlets, sign-up
sheets, and informational sheets about our organization.
Opportunity
Job Fair
Each year, SBSE co-sponsors
the Opportunity Job Fair (OJF) with the 3 other diversity engineering
organizations: the American Indian Society of Engineers and Scientists
(AISES), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and SSCLES (Stanford Society
of Chicano/Latino Engineers and Scientists). The OJF is the largest
engineering career fair on campus, bringing over 170 companies to
recruit. Three members from each of the 4 organizations serve on the
OJF planning committee and are responsible for making the corporate
contacts, organizing the logistics, and overall implementation of
the career fair. The OJF is entirely student run and organized. This
provides an excellent opportunity for members to step up and take
a leadership role within the organization. We usually encourage freshman
and sophomores to take on this responsibility so that they can begin
building strong leadership qualities. Member participation in the
OJF is also extremely important to SBSE because the income that is
generated from the career fair allows the Office of Engineering Diversity
Programs to contribute significant funding to our chapter. For more
information, and a complete list of companies present, please visit:

Annual
BSU High School Conference
Every Spring quarter, our chapter participates in the annual high
school conference, co-sponsored by the Stanford Black Student Union.
The combination of leadership, cultural and engineering workshops
turned out to be a great success. There was wide participation throughout
our membership at this event.
Black History
Month Poster Contest
This year SBSE will be sponsoring a poster contest through
our PCI chapter. They will be asked to create a poster describing
a contribution that an African American had made to science and technology.
Every poster entry will be displayed on campus during a soul food
dinner, and the winners will receive prizes. Please contact Melissa
Klufio, mklufio@stanford.edu,
