  1. Triclinio di S. Gregorio
  2. Oratorio di S. Marta e di S. Andrea
  3. Cappella di S. Silvia
  4. Tribuna della Chiesa de SS. Gio. e Paolo
  5. Clivo di Scauro

The eagle and dragons over the portals of S. Gregorio proclaim this 1630s facade by Soria to be a Borghese commission. It was the culmination of a restoration campaign begun under Paul V Borghese (1605-1621) starting with the three chapels (1) (2) (3) grouped at the center of the print. The whole complex, which included the monastery building at far right and a large vigna (farm) behind it, occupies the western corner of the Celian hill. The sloping Clivo dei Scauri (5) is spanned by a set of arches that helps separate it from another large holding on the left, centered around the church of SS. Pietro e Paolo (4). Vasi's related view of this 12th century complex, Plate 53, provides an opposing view down the Clivo dei Scauri. In Vasi's day the Celian hill was largely open land occupied by a scattering of churches, villas and farms.
