2022 Concerto Competition Winners

The 2022 Concerto Competition winners are flutist Kristie Park (left) and cellist Jessica Lee (right). The competition took place on 19 February 2022 in Dinkelspiel Auditorium, with pianist Karen Hutchinson and violinist Kay Stern serving as judges. Thirty students participated in the competition, which consisted of two rounds and lasted nearly ten hours!
Kristie and Jessica are both very active members of Stanford’s musical community. Kristie is a sophomore planning to double major in Sociology and Human Biology with a Music minor who studies flute with Melody Holmes. She is also a member of the Stanford Symphony Orchestra, is in a wind quintet with other SSO members, and is in the pit orchestra for The Marriage of Figaro. Jessica is a sophomore who majors in Political Science with minors in Spanish and Music and studies cello with Stephen Harrison. She is a member of the Stanford Symphony Orchestra, is in a string quartet in the Chamber Music Program, and plays in the Cello Choir.
Kristie Park performed Carl Reinecke’s Flute Concerto in D major, op. 283, with Stanford Philharmonia on 21 May 2022 in Bing Concert Hall. Jessica Lee will perform the Cello Concerto in E minor by Edward Elgar with the Stanford Symphony Orchestra on 2 & 4 December 2022.
Kristie Park began her flute studies at age 8, and has previously studied with Beverly Radin, Greer Ellison, and Jiwon Lee. While in high school, Kristie soloed with the California Youth Symphony upon winning the Concerto Competition and served as principal flute of the Associate Orchestra. She played in the California All State Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony in addition to the Music and Us Serving Everyone (MUSE) Ensemble, alongside her high school’s wind ensemble, scatter band, and pit orchestra for several musicals. In 2020, Kristie won the high school woodwind division of the Silicon Valley Music Competition.
Jessica Lee began her cello studies at seven with In-Kyu Lee and later studied with Ben Hong. Her awards include Honorable Mention and Merit awards in the National YoungArts Competition, 1st place in MTAC VOCE’s State Competition, and 2nd place in MTNA’s National Competition, and she is currently a member of the MTAC Young Artist Guild. Jessica had her solo debut with the Beach Cities Symphony at twelve, and has subsequently performed as soloist with the SYMF Festival Orchestra, Palos Verdes Symphony Orchestra, San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, and CalStateLA Orchestra.
